چکیده

In this paper we study the transient surface cavity which is created by the controlled impact of a disk of radius h0 on a water surface at Froude numbers below 200. The dynamics of the transient free surface is recorded by high speed imaging and compared to boundary integral simulations. An excellent agreement is found between both. The flow surrounding the cavity is measured with high speed particle image velocimetry and is found to also agree perfectly with the flow field obtained from the simulations. We present a simple model for the radial dynamics of the cavity based on the collapse of an infinite cylinder. This model accounts for the observed asymmetry of the radial dynamics between the expansion and contraction phase of the cavity. It reproduces the scaling of the closure depth and total depth of the cavity which are both found to scale roughly as ∝ Fr with a weakly Froude number dependent prefactor. In addition, the model accurately captures the dynamics of the minimal radius of the cavity, the scaling of the volume Vbubble of air entrained by the process, namely Vbubble/h 3 0 ∝ (1 + 0.26Fr)Fr, and gives insight into the axial asymmetry of the pinch-off process.

A numerical study of the effect of channel spacers on the performance of cross-flow forward osmosis membrane modules

In this paper, we perform two-dimensional simulations of cross-flow forward osmosis (FO) membrane modules in the presence of draw and feed channel spacers. For this purpose, the equations corresponding to the conservation of mass, momentum, and convection-diffusion for the mass fraction of solute are solved using a commercial finite volume flow solver. We consider six configurations of channel ...

Simulation of nanodroplet impact on a solid surface

A novel computational fluid dynamics and molecular kinetic theory (CFD-MK) method was developed to simulate the impingement of a nanodroplet onto a solid surface. A numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equation using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique was used to model nanodroplet deformation. Dynamic contact angle during droplet impact was obtained by molecular kinetic theory. This dynamic c...

Study Effect of Deformation Nanochannel Wall Roughness on The Water-Copper Nano-Fluids Poiseuille Flow Behavior

In the nanochannel flow behavior with respect to expand their applications in modern systems is of utmost importance. According to the results obtained in this study, the condition of nonslip on the wall of the nanochannel is not acceptable because in the nano dimensions, slip depends on different parameters including surface roughness. In this study, keeping the side area roughness, deformatio...
